Early masterpieces

9 March 2022 @ 20:00

Beethoven was only fifteen when he began the sketches of his Piano Concerto in B flat major, op. 19. Schubert wrote his third symphony, op. 200, at eighteen, and Bizet his first symphony at seventeen. It is not surprising that in all three cases one senses how much these composers felt indebted to their great models at a young age.

Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 2 in B flat major - it is numbered only because it was printed after the Concerto No. 1 in C major, op. 15 - has clear traits of a Mozart concerto (both in theme and form, as well as in instrumentation), while in Schubert's and Bizet's works one can hear how much Beethoven looked over their shoulders. Nevertheless, a certain originality and the first characteristics of their own style, of a musical identity, already emerge in them. Therefore, the three pieces are by no means to be regarded as epigonal, but as full-fledged masterpieces.

The soloist will be the young American pianist Claire Huangci, who is captivating the music world with her "glittering virtuosity."
